    Cycling safety tips

Eurobodalla is generously scattered with shared paths, mountain bike trails and road cycle routes that pass by beaches and waterways, through forest, bushland and authentic villages.

Our shared paths are signposted with the dual pedestrian / cyclist symbol identifying the path as a shared area. Most routes weave through relatively flat terrain and offer many attractions for our community and visitors alike.

To ensure you have a totally enjoyable, collision free cycling experience, please follow a few simple rules –some are just common courtesy and some are the law.

    • Keep to the Left. Everyone using a shared path should keep to the left as this will avoid collisions with other users. Cyclists must give way to pedestrians (Road Rule 250 & 251).
    • Cyclists must sound a bell or horn when approaching and passing others on a shared path.
    • Take particular care around children, dog walkers and older pedestrians.
    • Wearing an approved, properly fitted and fastened helmet is compulsory (Road Rule 256).
    • Maintain your bike. It must have at least one working brake and a bell or horn (Rule 258).
    • No riding across a road on a pedestrian or children’s crossing – you must dismount (Road Rule 248).
    • The cyclist who is 12 years or older must not ride on a footpath unless the rider is an adult and accompanying a child under 12 years (Road Rule 250).
    • Carry sunscreen, sunglasses and water, and drink regularly.
    • When cycling at night, ensure your bike has a flashing or solid white light on the front and a flashing or solid red light on the rear – both visible for 200m. Also a red reflector on the rear that is visible for 50m (Road Rule 259). When stopping for a break, answering your phone, or to check a map, choose a safe spot well away from the road or path. Always park your bike where it will not be a trip hazard to others.
    • Obey traffic signs and road rules. Keep to the left even on quiet gravel roads as vehicles can be encountered unexpectedly.
    • Riding two abreast is allowed when cycling on a road but not more than 1.5m apart (Road Rules 151).
    • Remember you are sharing our roads, tracks and shared paths and these tips will help make the experience enjoyable and safe.
